Engines off,
shore power on

Green power for ships at your quay. Whether you operate a container terminal, ferry terminal, cruise terminal, liquid bulk facility, RoRo terminal, or another maritime operation, Rotterdam Shore Power helps you make the transition to shore power. We enable you to supply moored vessels with reliable green electricity, allowing onboard diesel generators to be switched off. Together, we reduce emissions, improve air quality, and create quieter ports.

Shore power as a service

We deliver Shore Power as a Service. Rotterdam Shore Power develops, finances, builds, and operates the complete shore power system for the long term, including the procurement and supply of renewable electricity. Throughout the entire lifecycle of the installation, we are responsible for its performance, availability, and safety.

We build the shore power installation and ensure that it reliably supplies green electricity every day.

Shore-based power is the new standard on the way to a sustainable port. Engines off, shore power on!

Shore power is more than a large extension cord

Shore power requires the careful integration of energy infrastructure, technology, and operations. Behind every connection lies a complete system of high-voltage installations, frequency converters, cable management systems, and onboard vessel installations.

Dozens of stakeholders are involved in daily operations, including terminals, shipping lines, vessels, grid operators, port authorities, and technology partners. We bring all these parties together through a single integrated service offering

We develop, finance, build, and operate shore power facilities, including power supply, monitoring, maintenance, billing, and operational support.

This enables terminal operators and shipping companies to rely on a safe and reliable power supply throughout the entire lifecycle of the installation.

Shore power requires many steps and parties

We take care of shore power. Terminals remain focused on their core business.

‘Het aanbieden van walstroom aan onze klanten is een logische volgende stap in onze wereldwijde strategie om de uitstoot van de maritieme sector te minimaliseren’,

Harold Kunst, Managing Director bij APM Terminals Maasvlakte II.

Shore Power in 5 Steps

A successful shore power solution requires more than technology alone. We guide every phase of the process, from the initial feasibility assessment and design to construction and long-term operations. This ensures a smooth, efficient, and manageable transition to shore power.

  • 1

    1

    Advisory

Each project starts with a shore power scan, in which we assess feasibility and integration within terminal operations. Based on the outcome, we determine the project scope and the optimal business case from both a financial and sustainability perspective. Once both the terminal and RSP are committed, we formalise the next steps in a cooperation agreement.

  • 2

    2

    Feasibility

Next, we carry out a feasibility study and develop the initial design of the installation. In consultation with the terminal, we select the most suitable business model*, apply for subsidies, and define the project phases and overall timeline. These elements are documented in a project plan, after which the project can truly begin.

  • 3

    3

    Design & Development

We initiate the permitting process and translate the project requirements into a detailed technical design. In parallel, contracts between the terminal and RSP are prepared, and contractors are selected through a tendering process. This ensures a solid foundation, a practical design, and a smooth transition to the construction phase.

  • 4

    4

    Construction

Once the appropriate contractors have been selected, we ensure that the shore power installation is built. Project management is our responsibility. We coordinate all construction, civil engineering, and electrical works. Throughout this phase, we maintain a strong focus on schedule, quality, and safety, while safeguarding the continuity of the terminal’s 24/7 logistics operations.

  • 5

    5

    Operations

Following construction and commissioning, operations commence. We support vessels with safe and efficient connection to and disconnection from the shore power system. Through professional asset management, 24/7 monitoring and complete administrative handling, terminals benefit from a reliable supply of renewable electricity without having to manage the infrastructure themselves.

* Different business models are possible. Where the terminal operator and shipping line are part of the same company, the terminal operator may choose to purchase shore power directly from RSP. Where a terminal serves multiple shipping lines, it is generally more logical for the individual shipping lines to purchase shore power directly from RSP.

Where We Are Today

In Rotterdam, significant progress is already being made. Heerema, Boskalis and DFDS are using shore power, and this year we will start the construction of shore power facilities at ECT Hutchison Ports Euromax, ECT Hutchison Ports Delta and APM Terminals, covering 8 kilometres of quay.
