In the Waalhaven, a lot of work is being done on shore power facilities to run moored Boskalis work vessels on green electricity instead of fossil fuels.

Rotterdam Shore Power (RSP), the joint venture between Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, is building the shore-based power installation on the Boskalis site in Rotterdam’s Waalhaven. At this location there are two berths on the quay that are often in use. The ships come to the service center in the Waalhaven for maintenance and preparations for offshore projects.

Shore power as a service
As the owner of the shore power installation, RSP offers shore power as a service. Boskalis will realize the grid connection under its own management. The electricity comes from Eneco’s Dutch wind and solar sources. The project is co-financed by the municipality of Rotterdam and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.

Green leadership
The planned completion date of the shore power installation is 1 June 2023 and will supply 2 GWh of green electricity annually, resulting in a reduction of 1.6 kilotons of CO2 emissions per year. This project shows the ‘green leadership’ of Boskalis, which is beneficial for the port, the climate and local residents.

Third shore power location for RSP
Shore power is an essential part of the energy transition and fits in with the joint shore power strategy of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the Municipality of Rotterdam and in Eneco’s One Planet strategy, aimed at climate neutrality by 2035. After the shore-based power installation on the Rozenburg headland for Heerema’s offshore vessels and the Stena Line Hoek van Holland ferry terminal, Boskalis’ location in Waalhaven will be the third shore-based power installation for seagoing vessels in the port of Rotterdam.
